“I can’t” …. but oh yes you can.
Why do we all freeze when in a social environment we are asked the simple question, “So, what do you do?” The person in front of you is not asking for your W-2, your weight or your secret candy vice. They just want to know what you do. They are interested in what you have to say.
In that very moment of truth, lies your elevator pitch, your tag line or your mantra. Whatever it is you call it. No pressure but it is what will stick with them after you part ways. Just breathe now and tell them:
“I’m so glad you asked. My company’s main focus is …. and we cater to….” You could add, “Our typical client is … I am here at this meeting to…” How’s that?
Was that so hard? Ask them the same question and see how they respond. You will indeed learn from the way they respond. Is it casual, informative and quick? Is it so long you are peering around their shoulder for the Exit sign? It’s OK, we’ve all been there. It takes fine tuning and practice. That simple reply will morph and change many times as you and your business morph and change. It is a circle of (business) life.
The best advice we can give you is to know yourself, your company and your role. Be aware of the surroundings and the topic of the setting you are in.
You got this. You can do it. Now just be sure that all your outward facing communications such as your website, sales materials and trade show images support that message. Consistency is key and shows you are focused on your products and services.
Still need a little help? We got your back. Give us a shout, you can practice on us!
