Clear and compelling messaging makes the difference when communicating who you are and what you offer. Words on paper, on a website, or on the vows you speak on your wedding day represent your thoughts, feelings, and emotions. Your message comes alive and delivers with intent.

It is more than just words on paper and images on the internet. It is personal. I hope you enjoy the blog posts and learn more about the written word and how it can best speak for you and your business.

My First College Internship: Goals, Worries, and Learning

Sep 25, 2024

The following is a blog in his own words by Ryan Paquette, Siena College, Loudonville, New York.

As I begin my senior year in college, I am excited to see what the new school year will hold for me. But I am even more excited for my first-ever internship, which I will be undertaking at The Virtual Copywriter. Embarking on an internship is thrilling, especially in the dynamic marketing field. I am eager to break into this exciting industry. My upcoming marketing internship represents a significant career milestone and a valuable learning opportunity. The opportunity to market a children’s book will also be a unique experience, as I love children and have a passion for creative advertising.

What to Expect from a College Internship

One of my primary goals is to gain practical experience in developing and implementing marketing strategies. While I’ve studied various theories and models in the classroom, applying these concepts to real-world situations will be an entirely new endeavor. My only experiences with marketing have been through college lectures, textbooks, and class projects. While these have given me a decent understanding of what it takes to market a product or service, I am eager to gain firsthand experience creating real campaigns, developing creative proposals, and executing marketing strategies.

Marketing is fundamentally about understanding and influencing consumer behavior. I plan to generate new ideas considering various factors, such as consumer preferences, behaviors, and trends. Furthermore, I aim to learn how businesses tailor their marketing efforts to meet the needs and wants of their target audience.

Interning at The Virtual Copywriter will also be an excellent opportunity to enter the digital marketing landscape, which is vast and constantly evolving. I’m excited to get hands-on experience with tools and platforms like social media systems and other tools that will enhance my technical skills and provide me with a competitive edge in the marketing industry. Internships offer a unique opportunity to build professional relationships and expand my network. I look forward to connecting with industry professionals, mentors, and fellow interns, some of whom may be able to assist me in future endeavors. Networking can open doors to future job opportunities and provide valuable insights into the marketing field.

My understanding of digital marketing tools and techniques has consistently grown throughout my college studies, and this internship will allow me to finally put my skills to use and impact a real-world business. This internship represents my entrance into the business and marketing world, a world that I have been aspiring to join for years, as well as the start of a new chapter in my life, one in which I continue on my path to a successful career.

Common Anxieties Faced During College Internships

Regarding things I am worried about, I want to be sure that I am meeting and exceeding expectations and contributing meaningfully to this book’s marketing. I am also concerned with multitasking and meeting deadlines. I want to manage my time effectively and maintain a high work standard while handling various responsibilities. Developing strong organizational and time-management skills will be crucial in addressing this challenge. Furthermore, transitioning from a classroom setting to a professional work environment can be a significant adjustment for me. Understanding workplace etiquette, adapting to the expectations of a professional setting, being open to feedback, and being willing to adapt will all be essential in overcoming these initial hurdles.

Lastly, receiving constructive feedback is an inevitable part of any learning process, and I am a bit worried about how I’ll handle that feedback, especially if it’s critical. As someone still learning the ropes of the marketing world, I understand there will be occasions when I might not get things right the first time, and I hope those occasions are very few and far between. However, receiving that criticism and understanding where I may have fallen short will only provide me with more insight into how marketing works and will only improve my future work. Making mistakes is a part of the learning process, and I am sure those experiences will help form my experiences into the best I can be.

As I prepare for my marketing internship, I’m excited and confident. This experience promises to be a significant step in my career journey, offering invaluable learning opportunities and professional growth. I will be setting clear goals to master my marketing skills, gain industry knowledge, and remain proactive by seeking out additional projects and responsibilities. By focusing on these goals and addressing my concerns, I’m optimistic about making the most of this internship and giving 100% to lay a strong foundation for my future in marketing.

A Note from The Virtual Copywriter

I am pleased to be mentoring Ryan as my first intern. I hope to give Ryan real-life experiences in small business life, entrepreneurship, product development, and marketing. Thank you to Siena College for this opportunity.
