The Declaration of Independence was written in June of 1776 with a committee appointed to draft this famous document on June 11, 1776. The committee was led by Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, John Adams, Roger Sherman, and Robert R. Livingston.
The Declaration of Independence was ratified on July 4, 1776.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.
So many books, songs and movies have been written about this period in our U.S. history and how we came to be these United States. Let’s not forget this.
The Constitution is a separate document from the Declaration of Independence and was written and signed in 1787. It was to be the supreme law of the land and slowly ratified by each of the states/colonies.
The preamble begins the Constitution and the Amendments that follow detail the rights and protections we enjoy as American Citizens:
We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
